Epic Topwater Action

Bay Flats Lodge on San Antonio Bay Report

September 19, 2011 By Captain Chris Martin

Team Bay Flats guide Jason Wagenfehr stated "It didn't matter what size, shape or color top water you used on Saturday, the reds smoked them." We lost count on how many blow ups we experienced. It was an epic day for top water action. The first two hours were the best. Keying in on stained water on leeward shores of Maty, and finding nervous schools of finger mullet worked well. Best action was in front of drains in waist to chest deep water. Later in the day pumpkin chartreuse TTK 1/8 oz heads in the middle to lower water column worked for catching trout.

On day-1 Jason's team with Chet C. took 1st place with 109.25" with their top 3 trout 2 reds. Capt. TJ Christensen guys won 2nd place with 108.25", and Capt. Nathan crew took 3rd place with 107". This was a 10-boat 2-day session with Chet's customers in the AC Supply business.

Bay Flats Lodge on San Antonio Bay Report

August 18, 2011 By Captain Chris Martin

Monday was busy with a 6-boat schedule, and according to guests Greg W. "We caught & released so many reds on the flats with Captain David." All the boats experienced either limits to near limits of reds or trout for their efforts. Live bait was used over shell for trout, and red fish came on sand flats surrounded by grass beds. Captain Harold, TJ and Cooper entertained the same company with Mike C. as their host. Meanwhile Captain Rick fished Phil K. and son.

The lodge welcomes 16-guests fishing on Tuesday with another group of 16 arriving at noon for lunch & meeting, followed up with a 1/2 day fishing session on Wednesday & meetings. Wednesday we awoke to light winds and good trout catching for Capt. Steve, Harold, Jason, David and Nathan. Most boats average 20 trout for the 1/2 morning session. Shorty after their trip, Chef Greg prepared shrimp Alfredo with fresh spinach and broccoli for lunch. After lunch our guests resumed their meeting. Our newest guests Rick H. and customers arrived Wednesday evening for the next two -days. The highlight for fishing on Wednesday, Trish landed and released a personal best red fish with Captain Harold that measured 42-inches.

Weather Forecast Port O'Connor / Seadrift

Partly cloudy, highs around 100 inland...in the lower 90s coast. Southwest winds around 10 mph increasing to south in the afternoon. Water temps for San Antonio Bay 91 degrees, 89% moon illuminated.

226,000 Trout Fingerlings Released in San Antonio Bay

July 14, 2011
Bay Flats Lodge on San Antonio Bay Report
By Captain Chris Martin

This marks the first time that the Coastal Hatcheries program has released fingerlings into the San Antonio-Matagorda Bay Complex. This is the beginning of a long term commitment to enhancing the fishery in our area. I want to thank all our guides and staff members from Bay Flats Lodge for volunteering to collect brood stock so this release could be possible. These fingerlings are from the brood stock we caught with the Coastal Hatcheries. This is only the beginning for a better future for the speckled trout.

There have been 288,925 fingerlings stocked into SA Bay so far this year. Survival rate is variable based upon several factors...holding capacity of the location, food availability, predators, the handling/stress of the stocking, etc... Handling/Stocking stress and is the only variable that differentiates hatchery fish from wild fish that are already present in the ecosystem.

Our colleagues at the Marine Development Center in Corpus Christi have done research on red drum and trout survival prior to stocking. There is some initial mortality, but once the fingerlings are fully acclimated to the environment, they have every bit of a chance of surviving as any natural fish.
